This is the README.TXT file for Jumble Gems V1.0
August 18, 1998
Jumble Gems uses DirectX (versions 2, 3, or 5). This means that Windows 95 and 98
users (with DirectX installed) and Windows NT 4.0 users can play Jumble Gems!
Any computer that can run Windows 95 with DirectX should be able to run Jumble Gems
without any problems.
Jumble Gems may slow down or play jerkily if 1) you have a very old video card with
a small amount of RAM (less than 1 meg) or 2) you have another application running which
is doing IO (accessing the hard drive or CD-ROM).
Using ALT-TAB to "switch out" from Jumble Gems to another application IS SUPPORTED,
and should not cause problems.
Some mouse drivers may not work correctly with Jumble Gems. The mouse pointer may be
invisible, or leave garbage behind as it moves around the screen. Getting the latest
mouse driver from your mouse manufacturer will usually cure this. Also, you can try
running the program from the command line like this:
gems.exe -M
This uses a different system for erasing and re-drawing the mouse,
and might cure your problem.
Jumble Gems was compressed using WinZip32 Version 6.1, which supports long file names.
If you try to unZip Jumble Gems with an earlier version of Zip, long file names might
mot be supported. The unzip might appear to go ok, but Jumble Gems will crash. Make
sure you have a current version of the Zip utility.
Jumble Gems expects to find all files (EXCEPT gems.exe and hiscores.dat) in
a subdirectory called "dat". If all the files were unZipped into a single directory,
just make a "dat" sub-directory, and move all but the above two files into it.
Also, Jumble gems writes a couple of tiny files to the root of your C: drive.
